Plein air (“in the open air”)
painting trains the artist to observe
the essential nature of a subject or
scene: light, color, and sense of place.
In this class, geared to the advanced
beginner and intermediate artist, we
will practice skills and methods specific
to painting from direct observation.
The first class will meet in the parking
lot of Blake Gardens (see www.berkeley.edu
for a map), a campus facility in nearby
Kensington, where we will paint from
nature. We will emphasize the elements
that make paintings come alive, discussing
issues such as: What would personalize
your landscape scenes so you'll better
engage the viewer in your paintings?
How can we make color and line evoke
a moment and allow the viewer to be
drawn into the world of the image? Bring
a sketchbook, graphite pencil and ink
pen to the first class. For the rest
of the classes, you may paint in any
medium you prefer, bringing materials
you have already. We will discuss materials
during the first class meeting.
